Liquid Spine is an internationally renowned eco-contemporary dance company, Directed by Katie Pustizzi. The company uses movement to unearth the stories of water systems, through the lens of ecology, empathy, and impact.

Liquid Spine’s BYCATCH is a contemporary dance performance that confronts the environmental devastation caused by destructive over-fishing practices. The work explores the consequences of faulty fishing gear, bottom trawling, and ghost gear pollution. BYCATCH asks audiences to consider their own relationship to the ocean and to nature.

BYCATCH tells the stories of marine animals that were not meant for the net. Created using marine debris collected from coastlines throughout New England, BYCATCH transforms discarded ropes, nets, and weighted fishing gear into dynamic and expressive elements within the choreography. These materials become extensions of the dancers’ bodies, sometimes expanding their movement, while other times restricting it. A cast of six professional dancers navigate this constantly shifting landscape through powerful physicality, dynamic choreography, and an evolving and ever-present relationship with the repurposed materials.
