Viola crash-lands on the planet Illyria and believes her twin brother to be dead. Seeing that women don’t have much power here, she dresses as a boy, takes the name Cesario, and becomes employed by Orsino, a rich playboy. Orsino is in love with Olivia, a local heiress, but she is not interested. Viola is sent to woo Olivia, which she does very well- Olivia falls for Viola/Cesario- who likewise is falling for Orsino.

Viola’s twin Sebastian is not dead, but meets up with Antonio, a pirate, who falls for him. Sebastian sets off on his own and the twins are confused for each other.

Meanwhile, Olivia’s broke uncle Toby has been living off of and stringing along Sir Andrew, convincing him that Olivia will marry him some day. Olivia’s employee Maria is in love with Toby, but he doesn’t take her seriously. The three regularly party at Olivia’s house, joined by roving musician Feste, and the very-proper butler robot Malvolio looks down on them all. They discover Malvolio is in love with Olivia, and decide to trick Malvolio into believing Olivia loves them back. They take it too far.
